The World Health Organisation (WHO) has confirmed that 90 million people have been affected worldwide by the COVID-19 pandemic, as at Wednesday.
Quoting Xinhua, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that WHO put the figure of the reported confirmed cases of COVID-19 at 90,054,813, including 1,945,610 deaths.
According to the report, the United States of America (USA) topped the figure, both in terms of infection cases and fatalities, with 22,428,591 confirmed cases and 373,329 deaths reported.
The US is followed by India with 10,495,147 cases and 151,529 deaths, and Brazil with 8,131,612 cases and 203,580 deaths.
Other countries occupying the top margin of the confirmed cases included Russia (3,448,203); Britain (3,118,522); France (2,740,656); Italy (2,289,021) and Spain (2,111,782).
Also on top of the list of death tolls after the top three are Mexico (134,368); Britain (81,960); Italy (79,203); France (67,368); Russia (62,804); Iran (56,360) and Spain (52,275).
According to WHO regional offices, the Americas remained the most affected area by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a total of 39,835,210 confirmed cases and 925,289 death cases; followed by Europe where 29,251,917 confirmed cases and 634,670 death cases have been reported.
Meanwhile, and according to an information released by WHO on 12 January, 2021, 236 candidate vaccines are still being developed worldwide; 63 of them in clinical trials in Germany, China, Russia, Britain and the US.
