The Senate, on Tuesday, called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently implement the planned palliatives intended to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.
This was as members of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly commended the president on the decison of his administration to stop payment of subsidy on PMS.
Senate in Plenary, in a motion moved by Senator Patrick Ndubueze, agreed to, among others, constitute an adhoc committee to holistically investigate all controversies surrounding “subsidy and under recovery regime.”
The motion by Ndubueze, representing Imo North Senatorial District, was titled “Need to investigate the controversial huge expenditure on Premium Motor Spirit(PMS) under the Subsidy/Under Recovery Regime by the NNPCL”.
The motion was deliberated upon and contributed to by members on the floor of the Senate, as they urged the president put in place the palliatives urgently.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, thereafter got the nod of his colleagues to formally commend President Tinubu on his courageous decision to stop the payment of subsidy on PMS.
The lawmakers however, called on the president to ensure that the planned palliatives intended to be put in place to cushion the effect of the removal is urgently implemented.
Akpabio commended his colleagues on their decision to commend the president on the fuel subsidy removal, adding “we commend President Tinubu for the decision to remove fuel subsidy.
“We are excited for the courage displayed by the president. It was one decision that had to be taken and we are happy that it was taken during the lifetime of the 10th Senate.”
Senator Akpabio also echoed the unanimous call by his colleagues on the president as regards the subsidy palliatives as he said: “We are also looking forward to the implementation of the palliatives.”
Recalled that President Bola Tinubu had, on his inauguration on 29 May, 2023, announced the removal of the subsidy regime on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), otherwise known as petroleum.
He also subsequently announced that some palliative measures would be put in place to cushion the effects of the removal of the subsidy regime.
