Jakande, Former Lagos Governor, Dies @ 91
Former civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, reportedly died on Thursday at the age of 91.
Jakande, popularly known as Baba Kekere, in recognition of his close affinity with his political leader and former Premier of the defunct Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was the governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983.
He won he reelection for a second term and was in office till 31 December, 1983 when the military junta, led by the then Major General Muhammadu Buhari, toppled the Second Republic in a coup detat.
Jakande brought a lot of development to Lagos State, in line with the five cardinal programmes of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), founded by Chief Awolowo.
The former governor was also an
author and a journalist and later was Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime.
