An Evening With Dele Ogun
I had a great guest come visit me at home in Lagos yesterday. He was on a book-tour to Nigeria from his base in London.
Dele Ogun is a renowned corporate lawyer, historian, publisher, author of several books and a great motivational speaker. He authored the very popular book on Nigerian history, titled “A Fatherless People”.
He brought and presented me with a copy of his second book, another historical masterpiece with an intriguing title, “The Slave Ship Called Jesus”.
Anyone interested in the history of the slave trade on the West African coast, with all the nitty gritty details, should search for, and get a copy of the book.
There was, indeed, a ship called “Jesus” at the height of the Slave Trade used to ferry captured Africans across the seas to the ‘lands of no return’.
What an experience the evening turned out to be sharing four solid hours with Dele over hot, freshly made onion rings, French fries and drinks in the house, watching me play a competitive game of tennis at Ikoyi Club 1938 in Lagos over superbly grilled peppered Guinea fowl, the chilliest drinks in the world, and mature conversation with his fellow deep-thinkers, some members of the tennis section.
It was a really fulfilling day spent with a great Nigerian patriot.
