Tragedy struck in Rivers State Police Command, on Sunday, as an Inspector, Victor Okus, allegedly shot his two colleagues, killing an Inspector, Ibrahim Sani, in the process.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the sad occurrence in a press release, on Monday, adding that Inspector Okus has been arrested.
The Rivers police image-maker also states that the other victim of the shooting, Inspector Daniel Dauda, is receiving medical treatment in the hospital.
“The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened to report a tragic and distressing incident that occurred on Sunday, January 18, 2026, resulting in the loss of a dedicated police officer, Inspector Ibrahim Sani ‘m’.
“The suspect, Inspector Victor Okus, a colleague and fellow officer attached to 17 PMF, but on special duty at Intels, Onne, has been arrested and is currently in Police custody,” she stated in the release.
According to the accounts of the Unit Commander (U/C) 14 PMF, DSP Turaki Hassan and preliminary investigations, the tragic incident occurred at about 1320hrs at Next Cash and Carry Supermarket, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt.
Inspector Ibrahim Sani and Inspector Daniel Dauda, both attached to 14 PMF, Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel at the scene of the tragic incident.
“Inspector Okus allegedly shot his colleagues on the head and neck regions.
“The injured officers were promptly rushed to Nopsam Hospital for medical treatment, where Inspector Sani succumbed to his injuries, while Inspector Dauda is still receiving medical treatment.
“The corpse has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary, Port-Harcourt for preservation and autopsy,” it was added in the release.
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, was said to have directed a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident.
This was with a view to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this reprehensible act are thoroughly examined.
Inspector Okus, the state Police boss further stated, will face an Orderly Room Trial and subsequently charge to court for prosecution.
The Rivers State Commissioner of Police also assured that justice will be served.
He further advised officers that handling of firearms while on duty is a serious responsibility and not a routine task.
To avert a repeat of the tragedy, Adepoju called on police officers to know that it is also crucial to prioritise their safety and the safety of others so as to prevent potential tragedies.
The state Police Command extended its condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, and friends of Inspector Sani.
It further reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability within the Force.
