Suspects In Police Net Over Burnt Police Station
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed arrest of suspected arsonists who burned down a divisional police station in Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state last week.
Recall that hoodlums had launched attack on a checkpoint at Ikpe Annang Junction, killing a police inspector and razed down patrol van with the officer inside.
Also, another arson attack was launched, within same week by the hoodlums, razing part of the divisional police station at Essien Udim Local Council and destroying several vehicles parked in the station
In a telephone interview, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Odiko Macdon, said “the attack would have been more disastrous if not for the gallantry of our men who repelled the attackers. Many of them left with bullets wounds as patches of blood stains could be noticed at the scene of the incident.”
Stating that matters of security should not be a thing for public discourse, Macdon said the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Amiengheme Andrew, had immediately visited the scene the attack and ordered a discreet investigation.
He said the discreet investigation, as ordered by the police commissioner, was successful, adding: “Very soon your would get to know the efforts we are making in tracking down the suspects. We have made huge successes so far.”
According to him, following the incident, all police formations in the state have since been fortified with more security beef-up around personnel and other security infrastructure in the state.
“The police are doing their job of securing lives and property of the people. Therefore, it is totally condemnable and unacceptable for them to be subjected to attacks by the same society,” he explained.
He, however, said security should not be left in the hands of security agencies alone, noting that holistic action plan, involving all stakehokders is needed to address the avalanche of security challenges facing the country.
