Mr. Babatunde Tijani (aka TJ), an alumnus of Abiodun Atiba Memorial Institute, Oyo, has declared that education is not a scam, but a sure way to greater attainments in life.

The alumnus also supported the quest for the promotion of academic excellence as he gave out the sum of ₦1 million to best graduating students of the school and staff to further negate the ‘education is scam’ narrative.

He said education is a great ladder to success, advising students to remain curious, resilient, and also pursue their passions with purpose.

Tijani stated these when he awarded the ₦1 million to four outstanding graduating students and the staff of the school during the 44th Valedictory Service and Prize-Giving Day of the institution.

The alumnus, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, announced cash prizes of ₦200,000 each to the best students in Science, Arts, and Commerce, as well as the overall best graduating student.

Tijani also extended a similar sum to the school staff as a token of appreciation for their efforts in grooming the students.

“In memory of my late father, Chief Abdul-Lateef Eyitayo Tijani, who served as vice principal of this great institution from 1981 to 1988, and as my humble contribution to the school, I am delighted to award ₦200,000 each to the best students in Science, Arts and Commerce. Additionally, the overall valedictorian will receive ₦200,000.

“I am also pleased to gift the principal and teachers of Abiodun Atiba Memorial Institute the sum of ₦200,000 as a token of appreciation for their tireless efforts in shaping future leaders,” he said.

Tijani, represented at the ceremony by his sister, Ms. Omobola Tijani, urged the graduating students to remain focused and committed as they progress in their academic journey.

“Congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. Remain steadfast, patriotic, and always remember the children of whom you are.

“As you move forward, stay curious, be resilient, and pursue your passions with purpose. Go and rule your world, the sky is your starting point,” he charged.

He also paid tribute to his former teachers, saying they greatly influenced his academic and personal development.

“Your dedication and mentorship left a lasting impact on me, and I am grateful for all the lessons learned,” he said.

Tijani had previously donated multimillion-naira projects to the school, including the renovation of a block of six classrooms, 240 modern tables and desks.

His other interventions were installation of a modern borehole, renovation of the school mosque, as well as annual sponsorship of TJ BAB’S House during the school inter-house sports competition to promote healthy competition.

In his welcome address, the school principal, Mr. Razak Raheem, thanked Tijani for his consistent contributions to the development of the school, particularly in infrastructure and student empowerment.

“He has always shown support, especially during events like this. His impact is constantly felt in this school. May God continue to raise him and enlarge his coast,” the principal said.

Raheem also lauded Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, for creating a conducive atmosphere for the growth of the education sector and educators in the state.

He advised the graduating students to avoid social vices and focus on building successful futures.

“Secondary education is only the foundation. You must make tertiary education your next destination. As you go into the world, be good ambassadors of this great school. Shun societal ills like drug abuse, prostitution, cybercrime and all other negative influences.

“I urge you to continue investing in these children—encourage them, support them, provide for them, and most importantly, pray for them. Make whatever sacrifices are necessary to help them fulfil their potential,” Mr Raheem advised.

The highlight of the event was the announcement of Memunat Oyetunde as the Overall Best Graduating Student.

Oyetunde, who also emerged as the Best Science Student, got ₦400,000; Faizat Oparemi who topped the commercial class, received ₦200,000, and Jewel Olaoba, the best arts student, was awarded ₦200,000.

In her remarks, Oyetunde expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition and support, describing it as a great motivation to pursue greater heights.
