“The fight against decay must begin at the level of values. Integrity, honesty, selflessness, and godliness must once again become our collective compass.”

A decaying society is like a decaying rock. Outwardly, it may appear firm and unchanged, but internally, it is weakened, hollow, and fragile, waiting only for the slightest pressure to crumble.

This is the reality of many societies today.

While the structures of government, religion, and community remain visibly intact, the moral, ethical, and spiritual foundations have been corroded by corruption, immorality, and selfishness.

What once held us together as a people has been eaten away, leaving a dangerous emptiness at the heart of our common life.

In earlier times, the spirit of communalism defined our relationships.

Neighbours looked out for one another, goods could be left by the roadside for buyers to pick and honestly drop their payment, and trust was the glue that bound communities.

Today, that trust has been replaced with fear.

Instead of being our brother’s keeper, we are frightened by kidnappers, bandits, terrorists, and fraudsters.

Where love and goodwill once thrived, suspicion and violence now reign.

Even the religious institutions that ought to uphold morality have not been spared.

Many churches and mosques, instead of being sanctuaries of truth, integrity, and godliness, have themselves fallen into the abyss of materialism, exploitation, and immorality.

The voices that should cry out against injustice are often silent, compromised, or even complicit.

The situation is worsened by leadership failure. Those who swore to protect justice are the same people subverting it.

Those tasked with uplifting the poor are busy widening the gap between rich and poor.

The rich use their power and wealth to oppress the weak, while public office, instead of being a platform for service, has become a pathway for self-enrichment.

The poor are left hopeless, neglected, and increasingly vulnerable, while corruption spreads like wildfire across every sector of life.

We are, indeed, still physically the same as a society. The buildings, the institutions, the titles, and the appearances remain unchanged.

Yet the structure beneath is rotten and hollow.

And, like a termite-infested wood, it only takes a little pressure for the entire system to collapse.

This is why the call to action cannot be delayed: it is time to stop this increasing societal decay.

The fight against decay must begin at the level of values. Integrity, honesty, selflessness, and godliness must once again become our collective compass.

Families must re-emphasise discipline and moral training in their children.

Religious institutions must return to the true essence of their calling — preaching and practicing righteousness.

Schools must be more than factories of certificates; they must mold character.

Leadership, too, must be redefined. Leaders must be held accountable and must recognise that true power lies in service, not oppression.

Justice must cease to be a commodity sold to the highest bidder. The law must protect the weak and restrain the powerful, not the other way around.

Above all, the spirit of communalism — of being our brother’s keeper — must be revived.

A society that looks out for one another is a society that heals itself.

When honesty, compassion, and responsibility once again guide our actions, the foundations of our nation will be rebuilt.

The time for lamentation has passed. The time for cosmetic solutions is gone. If we do not act decisively, the rot will consume us completely.

But if we stand together, with renewed values, restored institutions, and responsible leadership, we can halt the decay and begin a new journey of rebuilding.

Now is the time to stop this increasing societal decay. Tomorrow may be too late.
