Allowing cougars to live their happiness
There is something about an older woman in a relationship with a younger man that gets people talking.
If the man is older, nobody bats an eyelid. In fact, we are likely to hear how he has found himself a young, beautiful woman who will keep him company in his old age.
But let a woman date a man younger by any standards, suddenly, everybody becomes a relationship expert…
The questions, whispers, snide remarks and unsolicited advice will not stop.
Welcome to the world of cougars!
Now, who exactly is a cougar? In popular parlance, she is an older woman who is romantically involved with a younger man.
She could be divorced, widowed, separated or never married. She could have children, grandchildren or none at all.
She could be financially comfortable, still building her career or simply a woman who has decided that her happiness matters.
But beyond the label and the occasional jokes about younger men being attracted to older women’s money, there are interesting dynamics worth exploring.
Why do older women go for younger men?
And why do younger men go for older women?
Let’s talk about it.
First, let us deal with the age question. Is age really just a number?
Well, it is a number, but it can also represent different stages of life, experiences, expectations and responsibilities.
An older woman may have lived through a failed marriage, raised children, built a career or business, acquired property and learnt a few lessons about human nature.
She may have reached a point where she knows exactly what she wants and, perhaps more importantly, what she will no longer tolerate.
Enter the younger man who finds her confidence attractive.
He enjoys her company, admires her intelligence and appreciates the fact that she is not playing games.
She, in turn, enjoys his energy, spontaneity and, perhaps, the refreshing feeling of being desired without having to fit into society’s expectations of what a woman her age should be doing.
Everybody is happy. Or are they?
You see, maturity and age are not necessarily synonymous. An older woman can be emotionally immature, just as a younger man can be remarkably responsible and emotionally intelligent.
There are younger men who know what they want and older men who are still trying to figure out life.
However, we must not confuse attraction with compatibility.
The butterflies may be doing their thing today, but what happens when life begins to make its demands?
Can they have meaningful conversations about retirement, career progression, children, health, financial planning and the future?
What happens when she wants peace and quiet, while he wants to explore the world?
What happens when their social circles, interests and long-term priorities begin to diverge?
Love may not count the years, but life has a way of reminding us that they exist.
Then there is the question of respect. Can respect be mutual in a relationship where the woman is considerably older, or will the relationship always be lopsided?
Some younger men genuinely admire older women. They respect their experiences, appreciate their wisdom and see them as equals, rather than substitutes for a mother-figure.
Others may be attracted to the perceived advantages of the relationship without necessarily appreciating the woman herself.
And let us not pretend that all older women are looking for younger men to mentor. Some simply want a partner, not another child to raise.
They have done enough nurturing and are not interested in adopting a grown man under the guise of romance.
But what happens when the older woman has money?
Ah! Now we are entering interesting territory.
A financially-independent woman has a certain freedom. She can afford her lifestyle, make her decisions and walk away from a relationship that no longer serves her.
She is not necessarily looking for a man to pay her bills, and this can change the dynamics of the relationship considerably.
Yet, financial independence does not make anyone immune to manipulation.
A woman can be wealthy, intelligent, accomplished and still fall in love with someone who takes advantage of her feelings.
She may begin by paying for a holiday, helping with a business or supporting a partner through a difficult period.
Before long, she may find herself financing a lifestyle while convincing herself that she is simply being supportive.
There is nothing inherently wrong with helping a partner. Relationships involve giving and receiving.
The problem begins when generosity becomes an obligation, affection becomes a transaction and one person’s financial resources become the foundation upon which the other person’s ambitions are built.
A woman must understand that being financially comfortable does not mean she has to become financially-responsible for a man who is capable of standing on his own feet.
And what about the children?
This is where things can get particularly complicated, especially when the children are adults.
Imagine introducing your younger boyfriend to your grown children.
Depending on the age difference, he could be closer in age to them than to you. How do you expect them to react?
Some may be genuinely happy that their mother has found companionship.
Others may be suspicious, wondering whether this young man is interested in their mother or the inheritance that might eventually come his way.
Some may feel embarrassed about what their friends or extended family will say.
Others may worry that their mother’s new relationship will affect family dynamics, property arrangements or the attention she gives them.
Their concerns should not automatically be dismissed as jealousy or disrespect. Sometimes, they may have legitimate reasons to be cautious.
At other times, they may simply be struggling to accept that their mother has a romantic life, independent of motherhood.
Being a mother does not mean a woman has stopped being a woman. Her children may be grown, married and raising families of their own, but she is still entitled to companionship, affection and the possibility of finding love again.
That said, introducing a new partner requires sensitivity, particularly where family relationships and established boundaries are concerned.
So, do these relationships succeed?
Of course, they can!!!
There are relationships with significant age differences that thrive on friendship, mutual respect, honesty, shared values and genuine affection.
There are also those that collapse under the weight of incompatible expectations, insecurity, financial exploitation or societal pressure.
The same can be said of relationships between people of similar ages. No age bracket has a monopoly on happiness or heartbreak.
Perhaps, the real question is not whether a woman should date a younger man, but whether the two people involved understand what they are getting into.
Can she trust him with her heart without feeling she must buy his loyalty?
Can he love her without feeling intimidated by her achievements or threatened by her independence?
Can they disagree without turning their age difference into a weapon?
Can they plan a future that acknowledges their individual realities?
And can they love each other without constantly seeking public approval?
Because society will always have something to say. If she dates an older man, there may be questions.
If she dates a younger man, there will certainly be questions. If she stays single, there will be questions too.
A woman cannot spend her entire life making decisions to satisfy other people’s curiosity.
