The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has disclosed that there was no loss of life recorded so far in the fire incident that occured at Otedola Under Bridge, as the Service has commenced rescue operation.
Margaret Adeseye, Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service,, stated this in a “Fire Alert?”.
She stated that the Service was currently attending to the incident which she said resulted from a tanker accident outward Otedola Bridge, Omole, Lagos at about 20:00 hours.
“The 30 tonnes DAF Gas Truck with an unknown registration number is on it way navigating the Lagos-Ibadan expressway before an accident resulting in an ensuing explosion, accompany with fire balls in front of a [parish of] the Redeemed Christian Church.of God (RCCG).
“The resultant fire quickly spread to the church and adjoining bungalow building as well as four different brands of vehicles as it was being mitigated from causing further damage.
“While firefighting operations are ongoing, there has been no record of casualty with further update to follow,” the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service added in the Fire Alert.
My Mechanic Died As I Escaped By Whiskers -Dotun Oladipo, Publisher, Eagle Online
Mr Dotun Oladipo, Publisher of an online news medium, Eagle Online, who witnessed the incident stated that he only escaped by the whiskers.
He added that his wife’s car, a Toyota Highlander, was completely burnt in the incident, adding that an auto mechanic in a nearby mechanic village was burnt to death while waiting to deliver the car to him.
The disclosure was contrary to the assertion by Margaret Adeseye that there was no loss of life in the fire incident.
Oladipo told Newscoven.com that the incident happened under the Otedola Bridge where his mechanic was waiting to deliver the car to him.
“A gas tanker coming from CMD to link the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway lost its brake and fell under the bridge, crushing two vehicles and burst into fire.
“The condition of patients in the hospital inside the nearby estate could not be ascertained as they were shouting for help.
“A mechanic in the nearby mechanic village was burnt to death while waiting to deliver a car to the owner. All cars in the mechanic village up in flames and also all the Keke Marwa in a repair centre.
“I am the one the mechanic was waiting for to deliver my wife’s car to. This is the first time the man will work on my car.
“He had completed his work; he was just waiting to deliver the car to me. He told me that he will not collect a dime from me until he finished working on the car.
“My wife’s Toyota Highlander was completely burnt. We only escaped by the whiskers. If not that we had waited to by water for dispenser.
“I spoke with the late mechanic not up to one minute before we realised that the tanker had lost control of the tanker,” a sad Oladipo narrated.
