President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major shake-up in the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces as he announced the removal of the country’s Service Chiefs.
The president also immediately appointed new Service Chiefs, in a move described as part of the efforts to further strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
In the new appointments, General Olufemi Oluyede takes over as the Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa.
The president also approved the appointment of Major-General W. Shaibu as the new Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes the Chief of Air Staff.
Similarly, Rear Admiral I. Abbas has been named the new Chief of Naval Staff, while, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as the Chief of Defence Intelligence.
President Tinubu, in a statement from the Presidency, on Friday, expressed appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership.”
He also acknowledged the contributions of the former Service Chiefs to national peace and stability during their tenure.
The president charged the newly-appointed top military officers to justify the confidence reposed in them, urging them to “enhance professionalism, vigilance, and comradeship that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
