A coalition of Anambra Central Women has endorsed the bid of Senator Uche Ekwunife, PhD for a re-election into the National Assembly.
The women coalition, while giving its nod to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Anambra Central Senatorial District, described her as the pride of Anambra women.
Hundreds of women from the local government areas that make up Anambra Senatorial District had gathered to endorse the re-election bid of the federal lawmaker.
The women, at a solidarity event in Awka, the Anambra State capital, said they were supporting a fellow woman who has contributed meaningfully to the development of the society.
The leader of the group, Oge Ekweozor, said the gathering was devoid of any affiliations with political parties, religious or ethnic inclinations, but a coalition of women in Anambra Central Senatorial District.
The coalition endorsed Senator Ekwunife to be re-elected for another term in the Senate for what it described as her quality representation and equitable distribution of constituency projects and programmes.
The Anambra Central women were optimistic that, with the return of Ekwunife in 2023 as a ranking member of the upper legislative chamber, better things will come, not only to the women of the zone, but the entire residents of the district.
Born in Igbo-Ukwu, Anambra State on 12 December, 1970, Senator Uche Ekwunife is a seasoned politician who has been in the political circle for about two decades and who has twice, though unsuccessfully, contested the governorship of the state.
A seasoned banker, she was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2007 for Anambra’s Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia Constituency and was re-elected for a second term at a point in time when the Lower Chamber was male-dominated in 2011.
In 2015, she was elected to the Senate to be one of the six women elected into the ninth National Assembly, others being Senators Rose Okoji Oko, Stella Oduah, Fatimat Raji Rasaki, Oluremi Tinubu and Binta Garba.
She lost her seat in December 2015 as her election was challenged primarily because she switched from one political party to another.
However, Senator Ekwunife returned to the National Assembly in 2019 as she won the senatorial election to represent Anambra Central on the platform of the PDP, having defeated her closest rival, Senator Victor Umeh of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).
