Elder Ajiboye Ogunsola, a prominent Peoples Democratic Patty (PDP) ward leader, was, on Wednesday, murdered in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.
The well-known grassroots politician and active political mobiliser was killed in the evening of 12 January, 2022 in what residents described as a politically-motivated killing.
Ajiboye Ogunsola, a respected community figure, was murdered in his hometown, Ikire, at a period of heightened political tension ahead of the Osun State governorship election.
The killing of Ogunsola sent shockwaves through the community and sparked fear among political stakeholders and family members.
According to local sources, some unidentified gunmen carried out the attack.
While details surrounding the circumstances of the shooting remain unclear, witnesses reported that the assailants fled the scene immediately after the incident.
The victim, the late Elder Ajiboye Ogunsola, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident shortly thereafter.
The late PDP ward leader was widely recognised for his involvement in grassroots politics and his strong influence within the party structure at the ward and local government levels.
Community members described him as a dedicated and upright political leader who played a significant role in mobilising support for his party, PDP.
The killing of the late Ogunsola came at a time of intense political rivalry in parts of Nigeria, particularly in Osun State, where political competition had reportedly heightened tensions within local communities.
Observers in Ikire and Osun State noted that the attack has added to growing concerns about politically-linked violence in the state.
Residents expressed shock and outrage over the incident, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the slain politician.
“The late Elder Ajiboye Ogunsola was an important voice in our community,” one local resident said. “His death has created fear among political families and supporters.”
The police confirmed that an investigation had been launched into the killing.
However, as of the time of this publication, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified.
The assassination of Ogunsola has raised fresh concerns about security during election periods and the safety of local political figures.
Community leaders and party members have condemned the act, describing it as an attack, not only on an individual, but on democratic participation at the grassroots level.
Authorities have however urged residents to remain calm while investigations into the killing of the late PDP ward leader continues.
