Full of conviction about the role of destiny in human activities, Yorubas hold a deep belief in “akosejaye,” the spiritual insight sought at the birth of a child.
It is a way of understanding the child’s essence, personality, path, purpose, and life journey. In many ways, it speaks to what that child is destined to become, from womb to tomb.
In the Scripture, this belief system mirrors what we might call prophecy or divine instruction. From Samson, who was divinely set apart as a Nazarite, to John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Chris, both lives were foretold before birth through messages delivered by an angel.
A message from the celestial to the terrestrial. These prophecies and instructions were not merely predictions; they were blueprints, complete with boundaries (dos and don’ts) that shaped their journeys.
Why does this matter?
Because patterns matter. Awareness matters. Understanding who you are matters.
Not everything is meant to be announced in its early stages. Some destinies unfold best in quiet incubation. Speak too soon, and you risk disrupting what is still forming. Yet, for others, proclamation does no harm at all. The difference often lies in alignment, knowing what applies to you.
You’ll see it in everyday life: some are guided to keep things private; a relationship, a wedding, or a pregnancy until the time is right. Others celebrate loudly from the start and flourish just the same. There is no single formula, only discernment.
Everything is connected, but not everything is universally applied.
You don’t have to accept every belief or story you encounter, but it helps to pause and look inward…
Listen. Reflect. Discern.
Every message is not meant for everyone, and what works for A may not work for G.
Knowledge of your path is not a predilection to fatalism but a guide to a greater purpose of what a person embodies. Everything operates within set limits or boundaries, otherwise, life would exist in chaos.
A fish thrives in water; an elephant belongs on land. Place either in the other’s environment, and something essential is lost. Purpose is tied to design or destiny.
Our lives, journeys, and paths are as unique as the lines on our palms and our fingerprints.
No two are ever completely identical.
May we be guided wisely and truthfully into who we are meant to be.
