The Oyo State government has intensified efforts to curb the spread of diphtheria disease and protect residents of the state, in response to the recent outbreak of the disease in some parts of the country.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, made the disclosure while speaking at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), Ibadan.
She described diphtheria as a highly contagious bacterial infection that spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing and direct contact with infected wounds.
The commissioner noted that the disease primarily affects the throat and upper airways, forming a thick greyish membrane that can obstruct breathing.
She added that symptoms of diphtheria included sore throat, fever, cough, swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing and, in severe cases, respiratory distress.
Dr. Ajetunmobi restated that the Oyo State government has intensified surveillance, case management and vaccination campaigns, adding that healthcare workers have been placed on high alert to respond swiftly to suspected cases.
The commissioner advised that, to prevent the spread of diphtheria, residents should stay informed, take necessary precautions, maintain personal hygiene and support the government public health interventions to contain the disease.
She counseled parents to ensure that children receive the three doses of the Pentavalent Vaccine at the age of six, 10 and 14 weeks.
“Pregnant women should receive the Tetanus-Diphtheria (TD) vaccine during antenatal care.
“Maintain good personal hygiene, including regular hand-washing, covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding sharing personal items.
“Avoid close contact with infected individuals and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms arise,” Dr.Ajetunmobi said.
The commissioner also released the following numbers for more information or to report suspected cases: 08033742052, 07032067763
