Inflation Falls To 14.63%, Food Prices Remain A Concern

Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined to 14.63 per cent in September 2026 from 15.39 per cent in August, but persistent food price pressures and rising energy costs continue to raise questions about the extent of relief available to households.

Declining inflation rate, rising food prices, energy costs

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its September Consumer Price Index report released on October 15, reported a 0.76 percentage point decline in headline inflation compared with the previous month.

According to figures reported by Reuters, food inflation, however, remained elevated at 19.59 per cent in September, slightly above the 19.57 per cent recorded in August.

The figures highlight the difference between a slowdown in the rate at which prices rise and an actual reduction in the prices consumers pay for goods and services.

Inflation falling does not necessarily mean food, transport or other essential goods have become cheaper. It means prices are generally increasing more slowly than before, although individual products may rise or fall at different rates.

Energy Costs Present Another Challenge

Despite the moderation in headline inflation, energy costs remain a concern.

A report by Nairametrics published on October 16 stated that the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise had warned that rising energy costs could undermine progress in reducing inflation.

The report put monthly energy inflation at 5.38 per cent in September, compared with 0.36 per cent in August.

Higher energy costs can affect businesses through electricity generation, transportation, storage and distribution.

However, the extent to which these costs have translated into higher prices for consumers needs to be established through interviews and market evidence.

The Federal Government also announced measures to ease fuel price pressures. In a statement published on 9 October, the State House said the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) had agreed to forgo its retail profit margin for 30 days, selling petrol at cost during the period.

The impact of the measure on pump prices and household expenditure requires further verification across different locations.

What The Figures Mean For Households

For millions of Nigerian households, a decline in headline inflation may offer a measure of hope, but it does not necessarily mean that the economic pressure they face daily has eased. When inflation slows, prices generally rise at a slower rate; it does not automatically mean that food, transportation, electricity and other essential goods have become cheaper.

This distinction is important in a country where many families must carefully prioritise their spending to meet basic needs. Even when the rate of price increases moderates, households may continue to struggle if the prices of essential goods remain high relative to their incomes.

The September inflation figures, particularly the food inflation rate of 19.59 per cent, suggest that food affordability remains an important concern. For low-income households, which often devote a substantial share of their earnings to food, even modest increases in staple prices can put pressure on other essential expenses.

Small businesses may also face difficulties if energy, transportation and operating costs remain elevated. Such businesses may be forced to absorb additional costs, reduce other expenses or increase their prices, potentially limiting the benefits of slowing inflation for consumers.

Ultimately, the real test of economic progress should not be the headline inflation figure alone, but whether households can afford adequate food, maintain access to essential services and meet their basic needs without increasing financial strain.

Until improvements in inflation are accompanied by stronger purchasing power and more affordable necessities, many Nigerians may find that the figures offer more statistical relief than practical comfort.

What Happens Next?

The next phase of Nigeria’s economic response should focus on turning the moderation in inflation into meaningful improvements in living standards.

A lower inflation rate is a welcome development, but sustaining that progress will require consistent policies, effective implementation and attention to the factors that continue to put pressure on household budgets.

One area of priority should be to address food affordability by improving agricultural productivity, supporting farmers with accessible inputs and financing, strengthening storage and distribution systems, and reducing losses along the food supply chain.

These measures could help improve the availability of food and reduce some of the pressures that contribute to high prices over time.

Energy costs also deserve sustained attention. Unpredictable or expensive energy supplies can increase production and transportation costs, affecting prices across several sectors.

Government interventions intended to ease fuel costs should therefore be assessed against their actual effects on pump prices, transport fares, business expenses and household spending, rather than judged by announcements alone.

There is also a need for transparent economic communication. The government and relevant agencies should explain what changes in inflation mean for ordinary citizens, while publishing reliable data that allow the public to assess whether policies are delivering results. Independent monitoring by journalists, researchers and civil society organisations can help ensure that official claims are tested against observable outcomes.

At the same time, policymakers must recognise that monetary measures alone cannot resolve every cost-of-living challenge. Sustainable relief will also depend on job creation, productivity, reliable infrastructure and incomes that enable households to keep pace with the cost of essential goods and services.

The months ahead will therefore be an important test of whether the current moderation in inflation can be sustained. If food and energy costs remain elevated, the benefits of lower headline inflation may continue to be limited for many households.

If, however, price pressures ease further and incomes and economic opportunities improve, the decline could become a more meaningful step towards economic stability.

For Nigerians, the central question is not simply whether inflation is falling, but whether life is becoming more affordable. That is the measure by which economic progress will ultimately be judged.
