As investigation continues into the explosion which occured in Ibadan last Tuesday, Professor Soji Adejumo has called for the creation of a relief fund for the victims of the incident.
Adejumo, a former chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (Board), made the call in a statement to commiserate with victims of the explosion.
This was as he called on the various government agencies to intensify efforts in investigating all persons and circumstances responsible for the tragedy.
He also lauded the humanitarian actions taken so far by the state government to rescue and provide comprehensive support for the victims of the incident.
Adejumo stated in the statement: “I applaud the prompt response of the Oyo State government, even within minutes of the happening of the incident.
“However, beyond the physical and other activities of government, I hereby call for the creation of a relief fund specifically for the victims of this carnage.
“All well-meaning individuals and organisations can contribute in kind and cash into the relief fund for physical and emotional support for the victims.”
Professor Adejumo commiserated with victims of the explosion and called on government agencies to expedite action to investigate circumstances responsible of the tragedy.
He said he had since visited the scene of the incident and described as horrific the extent of devastation and destruction he saw there.
“I have visited the scene of the incident which occured last Tuesday evening. The horrific extent of devastation and destruction is beyond description. Only God can bring restitution to the victims.
“My house at the Agodi GRA also suffered damages but which absolutely pales in significance to the carnage that happened at the site of the blast.
“We pray that Ibadanland shall not witness this kind of destruction again while we charge government and security agencies to fish out the culprits and punish them appropriately.
“My heart goes to all the families of the victims. May God continue to grant us His divine protection,” Professor Adejumo added in the statement.
