Senator Sharafadeen Alli has moved a motion for the Immortalisation of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Sen Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, by naming of one of the Senate Committee rooms after him.
Alli, a lawmaker representing Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the call in his motion of urgent national importance at the Senate Plenary on Wednesday.
It would be recalled that the late first-class traditional ruler who reigned as the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland for two years, passed away last Thursday at the age of 81.
Alli, in his motion, urged the Senate to honour late Oba (Dr.) Mohood Lekan Balogun, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan and who was once a member of the upper chamber of the National Assembly.
He advocated the sending of high-powered delegation on a condolence visit to the governor, late traditional ruler’s royal family, chiefs and the people of Ibadan.
He also stated in the morion that the Senate high-powered delegation should pay a visit to the incoming Olubadan who, incidentally, was a member of the House of Representatives.
Alli called for the expression of heartfelt condolences to the late Olubadan’s family, chiefs, the people of Ibadan, Yoruba race and Nigeria.
He highlighted the exceptional contributions of the revered monarch, saying he excelled as a statesman, former Senator and custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition.
Alli, in the motion, said late Oba Balogun’s wisdom, leadership and dedication to his people would be deeply missed, calling for unanimous support as a fitting tribute to his remarkable legacy.
The lawmaker urged the Senate to observe one minute silence to honour the memory of the late traditional ruler, who was an elder statesman, a request granted and observed by the Senate.
The trio of Senators Yunus Akintunde (APC-Oyo Central), Abdulfatai Buhari(APC-Oyo North) and Abba Moro (PDP- Benue South), among others rose in Plenary and supported the motion.
