Oyo State Police Command, last Wednesday, arrested an armed robbery suspect at the Apata Area of Ibadan and recovered a stolen motorcycle from him.
The state PPRO, DSP Ayalande Olayinka, disclosed this in a press release, dated 18 July, 2026.
It was noted in the press release that the arrest and recovery signified another significant breakthrough in the sustained efforts of the law enforcement agency to combat violent crime in the state.
As contained in the release, the arrest occurred at about 11:30am on Wednesday, when the Command received credible information from a public-spirited citizen.
It was to the effect that a commercial motorcyclist, identified as Muhammadu Kamilu, had been attacked and dispossessed of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle by a passenger who struck him with an iron hammer along Adeniji Estate, Apata, Ibadan.

“Acting promptly on the actionable intelligence, operatives of the Command Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) were immediately deployed to the scene.
“Their swift intervention culminated in the arrest of the suspect, Shafiu Nuhu, and the recovery of the stolen Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number AJW 842 QU, as well as the iron hammer allegedly used in perpetrating the attack.
“As a result of the violent assault, the victim, Muhammadu Kamilu, sustained injuries.
“Also injured was Nathaniel Ibrahim, a good Samaritan who courageously intervened in an attempt to rescue the victim from the attacker.
“Both men were promptly evacuated to a nearby hospital, where they received medical attention,” it was stated in the release.
It was added that the suspect, on interrogation, yielded useful information, confessing that he was a lone armed robber, specialising in attacking and robbing commercial motorcyclists within Ibadan and its environs.
It was further disclosed that investigation was ongoing to determine the possible involvement of the suspect in other similar criminal activities and to recover any additional exhibits connected to his operations.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has commended the vigilance, courage, and the timely intervention of the good Samaritan.
He appreciated the prompt dissemination of credible information by members of the public, which he noted greatly facilitated the successful operation.
He urged residents of the state to remain security conscious and continue partnering with the Police by promptly reporting suspicious persons and activities through the appropriate channels.
“The Oyo State Police Command remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding lives and property and will continue to deploy intelligence-driven and proactive policing strategies to ensure that criminal elements are identified, apprehended, and brought to justice,” it was added in the release.
The Oyo State Police Command has recently upped the ante in its commitment to combating crime and riding the state of criminal elements.
Less than weeks ago, two suspected armed robbers were arrested by police operatives and a firearm was recovered from them in Akoda Village, Afijio Local Government Area.
The arrest of two suspected armed robbers and the recovery of a firearm was linked to a robbery operation along the Oyo–Iwo Expressway.
According to a police report, the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 5 July, 2026, following a distress call received at the Police Control Room, Eleyele, Ibadan.
“The operatives responded swiftly, secured the area, rescued the victims, and combed the scene, leading to the recovery of one single-barrel gun and two clubs believed to have been used by the criminal gang during the operation.
“Further intelligence-driven investigation led the VCRU operatives to the hideouts of the suspects, culminating in the arrest of Abubakar Jape and Sheu Dengi,” it was stated.
Still in July, the law enforcement agency smashed a car-snatching syndicate operating in the state as it recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested three suspected for alleged vehicle theft and receiving stolen property.
The feat followed a report lodged at the Agodi Divisional Police Headquarters on 3 July, 2026, at about 4:00 p.m., by one Mr. Ruben Adebayo, a 55-year-old resident of Akobo, Ibadan.
He had reported that his Toyota Carina E, bearing registration number GGE 488 CN, had been fraudulently stolen by a passenger he had conveyed from Akobo to the Motor Spare Parts Market, Gate, Ibadan.
