The Corporate Accountability & Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) is embarking on a one-day training of journalists ahead the forthcoming elections.
The training is tagged “Journalism Training On Peaceful and Non-Violent Elections”.
It is supported by the European Union Delegation, under the EU Support for Democratic Governance in Nigeria Phase Two (EU-SDGN II).
It will hold from 8:30am to 2:30pm, on Wednesday, next week at the Initiative for Information, Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria, 54 Magazine Road, Jericho, Ibadan, Oyo State.
As stated in a release, the training is informed by issues that may raise the specter of apprehension in the land and among potential voters as the general election approaches.
CAPPA identified such issues to include, among others, possible violence, deliberate misinformation and spread of fake news, vote-buying, manipulation and voter suppression.
It noted that the issues may compromise the outcome of the elections, scheduled to hold on 25 February and 11 March, 2023.
Participants at the training will be exposed to germane topics that will be facilitated by veteran journalists and experts.
The resource persons will reinforce the indispensable role of the media in scrutinising the electoral processes, sieving truth from untruth, exposing falsehoods and evaluating the impartiality and integrity of the process.
Executive Director of CAPPA, Akinbode Oluwafemi, will deliver the welcome address.
The opening session will be moderated by Abayomi Sarumi, while Philip Jakpor, of CAPPA, will speak on the objectives of the training.
Dr Tunde Akanni, an associate professor of Journalism at LASU, will speak on “Understanding Conflicts and Drivers of Conflicts”.
Aderonke Ige, of CAPPA, will speak on “The Electoral Law and Guide For Media Coverage of Election Results”.
Lanre Arogundade, a leading light in the media profession and a former Students’ Union leader, will speak on “Elections and Conflicts Sensitive Reporting”.
Dr Olayinka Oyegbile will speak on “Newsroom Culture and Peace building In Election Reporting”.
There will be a practical session at the end of the training to be coordinated by Philip Jakpor.
