The Oyo State Police Command has uncovered a human trafficking ring in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, rescuing 84 individuals, including a child, during a major operation.
The victims rescued were believed to be nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) who were reported to have been brought into Nigeria under false pretenses.
As reported by ChannelsTv, the discovery was contained in an information made available by the Command.
The victims were reportedly rescued from a residential building in the Orogun Area of Ibadan where they had reportedly been held for an undisclosed period.of time.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were brought into Nigeria under false pretenses of securing employment opportunities.
The law enforcement agency stated that early findings also indicated that the members of human trafficking ring extorted large sums of money, reportedly in United States dollars, from the victims’ parents and relatives as part of an elaborate and deceitful scheme.
The rescued individuals were said to have been sheltered at the state Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.
This is as the police authorities were conducting further investigations to determine the full circumstances surrounding the discovery.
The law enforcement agency assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly investigated and that all those found culpable would be brought to justice.
Investigations are ongoing in respect of the discovery and the activities of the human trafficking ring.
