Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, approved the declaration of a 16-hour curfew in 10 local government areas of the state.
Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, stated this in a press release, disclosing that the curfew was contained in a memo issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Professor Musibau Babatunde.
Though the essence of the curfew was not disclosed, but it may not be unconnected with the rising wave of insecurity in the affected local councils, especially in the wake of the abduction of school pupils and their teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
Recall that school pupils and their teachers were abducted on 15 May, 2026, even as the Oyo State government and security agencies are still making concerted efforts to ensure the safe return of the abductees.
The 16-Hour Curfew
It was further disclosed that it was contained in the memo by Professor Babatunde that the curfew would take effect from Wednesday, 24 June, 2026.
It was also stated that the curfew would be between 4pm and 8am daily, and that it would last for 48 hours, in the first instance.
It was added that it would affect the 10 local government areas bordering the Old Oyo National Park where, it was believed, the abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Areas were still being kept by their abductors.
The affected local government areas, it was disclosed, included Oriire (Headquarters: Ikoyi-Ile); Orelope (Headquarters: Igboho); Irepo (Headquarters: Kisi); Saki West (Headquarters: Saki);
Saki East (Headquarters: Ago-Amodu); Atisbo (Headquarters: Tede/Ago-Are); Itesiwaju (Headquarters: Otu); Iseyin (Headquarters: Iseyin); Olorunsogo (Headquarters: Igbeti); and Atiba (Headquarters: Offa-Meta, Oyo).
