Residents of the ancient city of Kano, Kano State, on Thursday, came out in their hundreds in a peaceful protest to express their displeasure over hike price of food stuff.
This was as the protesters also called on government to urgently address the situation, saying they can no longer bear the pains and agonies.
The Kano reeidents, who thronged popular streets on Katsina Road, expressed grievances, saying they have been pushed to the wall, hence the need for them to come out to protest, despite the harsh weather.
Speaking, the leader of the protesters, Malam Usman Saidu Bello of Rijiyan Lemo, said the harsh economic situation has caused untold hardship to the teeming masses of the state.
According to him, the peaceful protest by the Kano residents was aimed at expressing their views over high cost of food stuffs.
Mallam Saidu Bello further lamented that the economic situation was getting worse each passing and that there seemed to be no end in sight.
“We the masses cast our votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It would not be good of him not to listen to our complaints and address the pathetic economic crisis we are facing.
“To pretend that all is well is dangerous. Let those people closer to Mr President tell him the truth that the masses are suffering and dying of hungers.
“Everybody is worried about the situation. Hence the need for us, Kano residents, to come out and expressed our displeasure over the situation.”
Mallam Saidu Bello said the situation has become worrisome, adding that “this prompted us to staged this protest for the government to come to our rescue.
“Because of this ugly situation, we are forced to come out to the streets to express our displeasure over the situation.
“Nowadays, people cannot eat three square meals. Even the one square meal is now becoming difficult, as a bag of rice, which was sold for N7,000 now attracts N70,000.
“Sugar which was sold for N8,000, now goes for N75,000. We want the government to intervened by coming to our aid. We can no longer bear the ugly situation.”
