Ahead the coronation of the new Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, a group, the Diaspora Initiative for Alaafin Coronation, has called on security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of lives and property within the Oyo Federal Constituency.
The group made the call in view of the increasing apprehension caused by the recent surge in kidnapping and other security concerns in some parts of Oyo State.
The call was contained in a statement by the coordinator and spokesperson of the group, Dr Ademola Adeleke and Prince Lashley Ladigbolu, respectively.
The group urged the Oyo State government, the Police, Amotekun Corps, the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) and Aare Ona Kakanfo, Iba Gani Adams, to reinforce security measures across the state, particularly in and around the venue of the event.
The Initiative also appealed to the Coronation Security Subcommittee Chairman, AIG Deji Ogundele (rtd.) and Special Adviser (Security) to the Governor to coordinate efforts that will guarantee a peaceful and well-secured environment throughout the period of the event.
The coronation of the Alaafin, taking place between 31 March and 12 April, 2025, was described as a momentous occasion, drawing high-profile dignitaries from across Nigeria and around the world to the ancient city of Oyo.
The event marked a historic milestone, as it has been 54 years since the coronation of the last Alaafin, the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, in 1971.
Diaspora Initiative for Alaafin Coronation emphasised the significance of the cultural and traditional ceremony and urged all security outfits to rise to the occasion and ensure an incident-free event.
“The Alaafin coronation is not just a celebration of our heritage, but also a beacon of unity, tradition and pride for the Yoruba people at home and beyond.
“We must do everything within our power to ensure that our guests experience the warmth, hospitality and security that Oyo is known for,” the Initiative stated in the statement.
“As Oyo prepares to host the world, all hands must be on deck to safeguard this historic moment, ensuring a smooth, peaceful and grand coronation befitting the revered throne of Alaafin,” the group added.
