INEC Declares Tinubu President-Elect

Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President-Elect of Nigeria, as announced by the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in the early hours of today, Wednesday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the president-elect of Nigeria.

Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the final results of the presidential election at the National Collation Centre, Abuja in the early hours of today.

By the announcement, the former governor of Lagos State became the president-elect, having polled 8,805,420 votes to win the 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu won the election ahead of four other main contenders — Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party); Peter Obi (Labour Party); and Rabiu Kwankwaso (New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate).

The three leading presidential candidates won in 12 states each, while Kwankwaso was only able to win Kano State.

Going by the results collated by INEC, Tinubu emerged the winner of the presidential election held last Saturday.

Votes announced from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and collated at the National Collation Centre, Abuja, indicated that Tinubu led his closest challenger, Atiku Abubakar (PDP), with about 1.8 million votes.

Atiku polled 6,984,290 votes to emerge second, while Peter Obi (LP), was third with 6,093,962 votes.

Tinubu lost Lagos, a state considered to be his home-front and Osun State to Obi and Atiku, respectively.

He, however, won in Oyo (449, 884 votes); Ondo (369,924); Ekiti (201,494) and Ogun (341,554) to emerge victorious p in the South-West.

Tinubu also won in seven northern states, including Kwara (263,572); Jigawa (421,390); Zamfara (298,396); Borno (252,282); Benue (310,468); Kogi (240,751) and Niger (375,183).

The APC presidential candidate also emerged victorious in Rivers State by polling 231,591 votes.

Atiku, on the other hand, also won in seven states in the North- Kaduna (554,360 votes); Sokoto (288,679); Adamawa (417,611); Gombe (319,123); Yobe (198,567); Katsina (489,045) and Taraba (189,017).

The PDP presidential candidate won one state in the South-West- Osun (354,366) and two states in the South-South- Bayelsa (68,818) and Akwa Ibom (214,012).

Peter Obi pulled the biggest upset as he defeated Tinubu in his base, Lagos State, where he polled 582,664 votes.

He also took many by surprise as he won in Abuja after polling 281,717 votes; Nasarawa State (191,361 votes); and Plateau State (466,272 votes).

In the South-South, the Labour Party presidential candidate defeated his APC and PDP counterparts in Cross River (179,917), Delta (341,866) and Edo (331,163).

Obi dominated the South-East by winning Abia (327,095); Anambra (584,621); Ebonyi (259,738) Enugu (428,640) and Imo (352,904).
