The Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, has said the popular Ibadan, Oyo State-based broadcaster, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, was arrested for alleged cyberbullying.
Hamzat, who owns a private radio station, Agidigbo FM, was arrested early Thursday morning by operatives of the Federal Intelligence Bureau (FIB) of the Nigerian Police and was subsequently taken to Abuja for interrogation.
The Police Force PRO, FHQ, Abuja, Muyiwa Adejobi, in a release, said Oriyomi was arrested in Ibadan with a police warrant in connection with a case of cyberbullying under investigation.
“Oriyomi’s arrest was sequel to his refusal to honour Police invitation severally, which prompted the police to secure a warrant for his arrest.
“We are looking into the petition written against him on his violation of the Cyber Crime Act, 2015, and necessary action will be taken to do justice in the matter,” Adejobi stated in the release.
However, a statement from the office of the broadcaster stated that Hamzat’s arrest is not unconnected with his stance over the murder, last year of Timothy Adegoke, a MBA student at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The broadcaster has been vociferously insistent on his call for justice over the death of Adegoke who was allegedly killed in an hotel in Ile-Ife.
The owner of the hotel, Mr. Rahmon Adedoyin and his staff have be arrested in connection with the death of Adegoke, a native of Eruwa in Oyo State and they are still standing trial over the death of the deceased.
