Democracy And Finite Terminus of Traditional Institutions In Partisan Politics

“Ultimately, in a democracy, citizens, not traditional institutions, express their preferences through the ballot box. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can not compel it to drink.”

Our elders say that true honour can not be attained through specious dignity. Democracy empowers citizens with freedom of conscience, independence of thought, and the liberty to make political choices according to their convictions.

In a democratic society, consent—not coercion—is the foundation of legitimate authority. Individual liberty, therefore, remains one of the cardinal ideals of democracy.

Traditional institutions, on the other hand, serve as the adhesive that binds communities together across political, religious, and social divides. The Yoruba, in recognition of this sacred responsibility, aptly describes the traditional ruler as “Baba Gbogbo Wa”—the father of all. Such a father is expected to treat every child with fairness and impartiality.

Role of traditional institutions in democracy

The intersection of traditional institutions, democracy and partisan politics, however, poses a serious challenge to this ideal. A traditional ruler who is perceived to favour one political party or candidate over another risks being viewed not as an impartial father but as one who openly prefers one child above the rest. Such a perception can gradually erode the moral authority and reverence associated with the throne.

It bears repeating that the strength of traditional institutions lies in cultural preservation, civic leadership, inclusion, and impartiality. Once these virtues are compromised, the institution itself may lose the respect that has sustained it for generations.

The true greatness of a traditional ruler is measured not by political conquest, but by the confidence and trust he commands across all divides.

History offers inspiring examples of rulers whose commitment to duty transcended personal interests. Marcus Aurelius, the photographer, who ruled the Roman Empire from AD 161 to 180, remains celebrated for placing justice, duty, and the welfare of his people above personal comfort.

Historical accounts describe how Aurelius sold palace treasures to provide relief during times of hardship, rather than burdening his subjects with excessive taxation. His example illustrates that genuine leadership is defined by sacrifice and commitment to the common good.

In our own time, traditional rulers best preserve their honour by remaining above partisan politics while championing the welfare of their people. A monarch whose focus is the common good rather than political advantage is more likely to earn enduring respect from all segments of society.

Ultimately, in a democracy, citizens, not traditional institutions, express their preferences through the ballot box. As the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water, but you can not compel it to drink. Likewise, while respected leaders may offer counsel, the final political choice belongs to the people.

There have been rumours suggesting that the revered Olubadan of Ibadanland is sympathetic to a particular political tendency. Such claims remain matters of public speculation unless supported by credible evidence. It is my sincere hope that they remain nothing more than allegations, for the dignity of the throne should never be drawn into partisan controversy.

Upon ascending the throne, many, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, advised Kabiyesi that the institution of kingship demands political restraint. While every individual may hold personal political views, wisdom dictates that a monarch should keep such preferences private in order to preserve the neutrality and prestige of the palace.

Traditional rulers should not be actively involved in partisan politics because they occupy a unique and revered position as custodians of culture, promoters of peace, and symbols of unity.

Their authority derives not from political parties but from history, tradition, and the confidence reposed in them by their people. One of their foremost responsibilities is to remain the father of all, irrespective of political affiliation.

The perception that a traditional ruler has become partisan can weaken the trust, respect, and moral authority that are indispensable to the institution. Political neutrality I, therefore think, is not merely desirable—it is essential.

Furthermore, traditional rulers frequently serve as mediators during communal disputes and periods of political tension. Their ability to reconcile opposing interests depends largely on the confidence all parties have in their impartiality.

Since partisan politics is often characterised by intense rivalry and criticism, active involvement may unnecessarily expose the traditional institution to controversy and diminish its esteem.

Although the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does not assign partisan political functions to traditional rulers, they continue to play invaluable roles in promoting peace, preserving cultural heritage, supporting development initiatives, encouraging civic responsibility, and advising governments on matters affecting their communities.

This, however, does not require them to remain silent on issues of public importance. They have both the right and the responsibility to speak on matters of security, education, healthcare, youth empowerment, economic development, and good governance.

Such interventions, however, should be issue-based, rather than party-based, so that they continue to enjoy the confidence of all their subjects.

Ultimately, the enduring strength of traditional institutions lies in their impartiality. For a monarch who previously held elective political office, the temptation to re-engage in partisan politics may understandably exist. Yet, the greater honour lies in rising above such inclinations and becoming a unifying father to all.

May God continue to bless Kabiyesi, grant him wisdom, and make his reign peaceful, prosperous, and worthy of the noble legacy of his forebears.
