In a major boost to digital education, Edge Technologies, a leading technology institute in Nigeria, has donated computer laboratories to Emmanuel Agboola Grammar School and Molete Community High School, both in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing digital literacy and preparing students for the transition to computer-based testing (CBT) in national examinations, such as WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB.
Speaking at the official handover ceremonies, the Chief Executive Officer of Edge Technologies, Professor Seyi Akanbi, emphasised the importance of computer literacy for students in today’s rapidly evolving world.
He recounted how access to technology changed his life and urged stakeholders to support efforts to bridge the digital divide.
“Government alone cannot do it. All stakeholders must contribute in whatever capacity they can to promote digital literacy and make our society better,” Akanbi, an Adjunct Professor at the University of the District of Columbia, Washington DC. said.
At Emmanuel Agboola Grammar School, the principal, Mr. Femi Ogunlana, described the donation as a monumental step in the school’s development.
He noted that with the plan by the Federal Government to implement CBT for public examinations by 2026, digital competence is now essential for every student.
“Digitization is becoming the norm. To remain relevant and competitive, our students must be digitally literate,” Ogunlana said.
“Edge Technologies has kick-started this digital revolution in our school, and for that, we are deeply grateful,” he added.
Ogunlana praised Professor Akanbi as a role model who rose from modest beginnings as a graphic artist to become a globally respected artificial intelligence professor, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.
He revealed that Edge Technologies has also pledged continued support, including the formation of a computer society and further training for students and staff.
With over 600 students enrolled at the school, Ogunlana called on the tech firm and other well-meaning stakeholders to help expand the facility, particularly in the areas of computer supply and internet connectivity.
“We assure Edge Technologies that we will make the best use of this facility to shape a new generation of tech-savvy youths who will contribute meaningfully to the nation’s development,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Principal of Molete Community High School, Mrs. T. Egbeahia, expressed appreciation to Professor Akanbi for giving back to his alma mater.
“You are the first old student to do something this tangible for the school since I assumed office, and we deeply appreciate it,” she said.
The Inspector General for Ogbomoso Zone, Rev. Dr. Dele Oyedokun, who represented the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, lauded the gesture. He urged students to take full advantage of the facilities provided, stressing that such efforts complement the state government’s commitment to modernising education.
PTA executives, teachers, students, and community stakeholders, who attended the event, all expressed enthusiasm about the impact the new digital centres will have on digital learning and future opportunities for the students.
