Late Justice P. O. Aderemi JSC Annual Lecture Series Holds On Thursday
President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr Olumide Akpata, will be among speakers at the 2021 edition of the late Justice P. O. Aderemi (Jsc) Annual Lecture Series (JAALS), coming up on Thursday.
The annual lecture series is organised by the family of the late jurist and a former Justice of the Supreme Court, Honourable Justice Pius Olayiwola Aderemi Aderemi JSC who died in 2018.
As disclosed in a statement by the family of the late eminent jurist, for the 2021 edition of the annual lecture series, the NBA President, Mr. Akpata, will deliver the Keynote Paper titled: “Devolution of Powers: A Panacea To Nigeria’s Insecurity Challenges?”
The event, which would take place at the Aare Afe Babalola Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, will commence by 12noon prompt, on Thursday.
The maiden lecture, titled “Governance and Good Governance: The Role of Governments”, was delivered by Emeritus Professor Michael Omolewa OFR.
The panel on the lecture was chaired by Mrs. Funmi Roberts; the deputy governor of Oyo State, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan; the state Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Munta Abimbola and the Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly.
Speaking on the essence of the annual lecture, one of the children of the late jurist, Kunle Aderemi, said it was set up by the children in 2019 “to immortalise the memory of our late father, Hon. Justice Pius Olayiwola Aderemi JSC, who passed on to glory in the year 2018).
“We, the, children birthed an annual lecture series: the Justice Aderemi Annual Lecture Series (JAALS) to honour the memory of our late father.
“This year, and in view of what is almost becoming a national threat to our collective survival, our focus will be to carefully unpack and analyse the advocacy around empowering sub-national governments in Nigeria.
“And to see, whether if this is implemented (which some have argued will place matters of security exclusively in the hands of the state chief executives), it will make the increasing spate of Nigeria’s insecurity to abate.”
