The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has awarded a contract with N1.1 billion for the construction of a 250-seater Virtual Examination Centre (VEC) at Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Iseyin Campus.
This is as the organisation is preparing to commission the N1billion IT hub it constructed at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan before the end of the month of May.
This was contained in a letter by the telecoms regulatory agency addressed to the Vice Chancellor of LAUTECH signalling the process of commencement of the construction of the VEC project.
The features of the VEC to be constructed included building infrastructure to accommodate 250 workstations (one unit); 250 computers and 250 furniture (computer desks and chairs);
Server infrastructures (one unit); printers and scanners (one each); power peripherals; air conditioners (nine units); 200KVA Generator (one unit); VSAT equipment (one unit).
Other facilities expected along with the VEC project included Local Area Networks (LAN) and and one-year bandwidth subscription for internet access.
As contained in the letter to the Vice Chancellor of LAUTECH, the construction of the VEC would be completed between six and nine months.
It would be recalled that the Commission (NCC) has just announced the commencement of the training of another batch of 600 youths in ICT skills.
The training, which will take place at 12 centres nationwide, is to empower beneficiaries to function productively in the new digital age.
The training is under the Digital Literacy and Skills, a policy that seeks to redirect and reposition the Nigerian youths for the digital era through a programme on digital job creation.
It is taking place in Ibadan, Lagos, Ilorin, Abuja and 12 other centres across the country.
The two-week long programme will include the free accommodation and feeding of participants and the provision of laptops.
Other benefits for the beneficiaries include mobile mifi internet devices with three months subscriptions, training materials, and training certificates.
