Okoi Liyomo, a Police Constable who reportedly macheted one man in 2022, is currently embroiled in another controversy as he was alleged to have stolen the rifle of his colleague.
Liyomo, who was said to have been pardoned for the first offence and subsequently redeployed to Port Harcourt, Rivers, State, allegedly stole the rifle last week.
According to a police source, he was said to have sold the stolen rifle for over One Million Naira (₦1m).
A video emerged in July 2022 in which the Police Constable was depicted as brutally attacking a man with a machete in Ekori in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident, coming from a supposed law enforcement agent, generated widespread public outrage and several demands for accountability.
However, following the incident, Constable Liyomo was reportedly pardoned and was reassigned to Port Harcourt, where he resumed duties.
Constable Liyomo allegedly committed another offense last week by stealing the colleague’s rifle while on duty.
Reports indicated that he transported the rifle to his hometown in Cross River State where he allegedly sold it for over One Million Naira.
It has not been made known if the stolen rifle has been recovered from the said buyer.
The Nigerian Police authorities have launched an investigation into the allegation (as well as a fresh investigation into the previous offense), leading to his arrest.
Constable Okoi Liyomo is currently being detained at the Zone 6 Police Station for further questioning in respect of the rifle theft.
