Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, deserves the National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award for his immense contributions to the development of the nation’s telecoms industry.
Director General of the National Productivity Centre, Dr Nasir Olaitan Raji-Mustapha, stated this while explaining why the centre deemed it fit to confer the Award on the NCC boss.
Raji-Mustapha disclosed, in a statement, that Danbatta would be honoured with the NPOM Award and commended his contributions to the telecoms industry.
He stated that the NPOM Award is specially for individuals who have demonstrated exemplary leadership, innovation and dedication in their respective fields.
Danbatta, he said, possessed the above-listed attributes, among several others, adding that the NCC boss has distinguished himself as an exemplary leader.
“The NCC EVC has spearheaded several initiatives that have revolutionised the telecommunications landscape in the country.
“His visionary leadership and strategic decisions have led to remarkable achievements and noteworthy milestones for the industry,” it was stated in the statement.
Some of the notable accomplishments attributed to Danbatta’s tenure as the NCC boss include the promotion of broadband penetration and consumer empowerment and protection.
Deserving of the Award, he is also reputed to have succeeded in evolving sustainable industry growth, and digital inclusion and innovation, among others.
To his credit, Danbatta pioneered NCC’s relentless efforts to enhance broadband connectivity across Nigeria, a move which has led to a great improvement in making the internet accessible to millions of users across the country.
NCC is the independent national regulatory authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.
The Commission is responsible for creating an enabling environment for competition among operators in the industry.
It is also saddled with the responsibility of ensuring the provision of qualitative and efficient telecommunications services throughout the country.
Over the years, NCC has earned a reputation as a foremost telecom regulatory agency in Africa, even as it hopes to catalyze the use of ICTs for different aspect of national development.
In order to achieve its mandate, the Commission has put in place the necessary licensing and regulatory framework for the supply of telecommunications services.
The Commission is driven by its guiding principles namely, Fair, Firm and Forthright, in carrying out its duties and functions as the national telecommunications regulator.
