The new chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), Zone C, South-West, Deacon Owolabi Oladejo, has promised that his tenure would entrench professionalism, respect for codes and ethics of broadcasting.
The media business guru also emphasized effective training and creation of development opportunities for both the executives and staff of members of the organisation in the zone.
Deacon Oladejo, who is also the chairman, Metropolitan Broadcasting Services, owners of Impact Business Radio (IBR) and African Independent Television (AITV), Ibadan, made this known while revealing his plan of action for BON in the zone.
He said it was time to take the issue of ethical and professional media practice more seriously through a wholistic reforms in the areas of periodic seminars, roundtable talks, workshops and exchange programmes among media outfits.
The BON media executive expressed the belief that such effort will reduce infractions that have crept into the business of broadcasting.
“The first thing we need to understand is this good gate leads to good neighbourliness. We need to be able to professionalise broadcasting.
“That is a great challenge because the issue of broadcasting goes beyond having access to the microphone.You may determine what happens in your environment.
“The people that will have access to that must be properly trained to be psychologically ready to contribute to the development of the society. You cannot grow beyond the information available to you,” he said.
Deacon Oladejo also stressed the need for community impactful media broadcasting by emphasizing contents on what people need to know about issue having direct effect on their daily lives and societal development.
“We have this huge challenge on our laps that how do we ensure that we make real progress. It is good to entertain people, but there must be a purpose for broadcasting and that is what I pray we’ll be able together right,” he added.
The new BON Zone C, South-West Chairman sympathized with media establishment owners over the current high running cost caused by high cost of diesel, equipment maintenance and other overheads.
He however enjoined them to stick to standard practice as the audience looks up to them for quality and impactful information.
BON Zone C, South-West had recently named General Manager of Pensioners’ FM, Dr Babatunde Tiamiyu, as its Assistant Secretary.
Other members of executive of BON Zone C include Dr Ambros Somide, DAAR Communication, Lagos (Vice Chairman); Mrs Toyin Sogbesan, OGBC, Abeokuta (Secretary); Mrs Aminat Tairu, Rave TV, Lagos (Treasurer) and Mr Rasheed Folaranmi, OSBC, Osogbo (Public Relations Officer).
