Two women, Chinyere Nwozu and Ngozi Akaeme, have been arrested by the police for allegedly stealing a one-week-old baby in Ogun State.
Chinyere was said to have taken possession of the stolen child after she had made a payment of N500,000 to Ngozi who allegedly stole the child from the biological mother.
One of the suspects, Chinyere (53), was arrested by men of the state Police Command, last Monday, while her accomplice, was later arrested by the law enforcement agency.
This was contained in a press release, AZ:5310/OGS/PRO/VOL.7/136.30/07/2022, today by the Ogun Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi.
According to the release, the first suspect, Chinyere, was arrested at about 9am of the said date when she was seen with a little child who was crying but she cannot breastfeed him as expected of a mother.
“This arouses the suspicion of some members of public who quickly alerted the police at the Sango Ota Divisional Headquarters.
“Upon the information, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Sango Ota, SP Dahiru Saleh, detailed his detectives to the scene where the woman was promptly arrested.
“On interrogation, she confessed to the police that she is not the biological mother of the child but that she bought the child somewhere in Agege area of Lagos State, through one Ngozi Akaeme, at the rate of 500,000 naira,” DSP Oyeyemi stated.
He further said that, upon Chinyere’s confession, police detectives went after the said Ngozi Akaeme and got her arrested.
“She confessed been an accomplice to Chinyere Nwozu and that she actually negotiated with the biological mother of the baby who, according to her, agreed to sell the baby.
“Efforts to make her [Ngozi] accompany policemen to locate the real mother of the child proved abortive,” the Ogun Police image-maker stated.
He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
