Cholera: Nigeria Records 31,425 Suspected Cases, 816 Deaths In 7 Months •51% Males; 49% Females •Bauchi Worst Hit With 11,375 Cases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has disclosed that the country has reported 31, 425 suspected cases of cholera outbreak and 816 deaths resulting from the disease between January and July, 2021.

The Centre, however, further disclosed that there was a decrease in the number of new reported cases reported between Week 29 and Week 30.

The disclosures are contained in the Weekly Epidemiological Report 07, Epi Week 30-26 July to 1 August, 2021 of the NSCDC Cholera Situation Report.

Giving a highlight of the spread of the disease, the NCDC reported that the suspected cases were reported in 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The affected states, according to the NCDC Cholera Situation Report, include Benue, Delta, Zamfara, Gombe, Bayelsa, Kogi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Kano, Kaduna and Plateau, Kebbi, Cross River, Nasarawa, Niger, Jigawa, Yobe, Kwara, Adamawa, Enugu, Katsina, Borno and the FCT.

In its Epi-Summary, the NCDC stated that: “As at 1 August, 2021, a total of 31,425 suspected cases, including 816 deaths (CFR 2.6 per cent) have been reported from 22 states and the FCT, since the beginning of the year.

“Of the reported cases, since the beginning of the year, 27 per cent are aged 5-14 years; of all suspected cases, 51 per cent are males.

“There has been a decrease in the number of new cases in the last two weeks: Bauchi (773); Niger (183); Katsina (120); and FCT (64) account for 50.9 per cent of 1, 941 cases reported in Weeks 29 and 30.

“Since the beginning of the year, a total of 709 samples have been collected with positive cases as follows- 234 (RDT positive only); 77 (culture positive); 311 (RDT and culture positive). The Test Positivity Rate (TPR) for laboratory confirmation by culture is 25 per cent.”

According to the report, Bauchi State is the worst hit by the cholera disease as it reported suspected cases of 11, 357 and 133 deaths between January and July, 2021.

Also topping the chart are Kano (5, 219 suspected cases: 143 deaths); Sokoto (2, 651 suspected cases: 100 deaths); Zamfara (2, 386 suspected cases: 19 deaths) and Jigawa (2, 166 suspected cases: 65 deaths).

Others states are Katsina (1, 333 suspected cases: 58 deaths); Niger (1, 118 suspected cases: 13 deaths); the FCT (1, 113 suspected cases: 70 deaths) and Plateau (1, 047 suspected cases: 17 deaths).

The NCDC in its highlight for Week 30- 26 July to 1 August, 2021, further stated: “In the reporting week, seven states and the FCT reported 1, 162 suspected cases.

“Bauchi (773); Niger (183); Katsina (120); FCT (64); Jigawa (13); Kano (four); Borno (four); Adamawa (one) and the FCT had two confirmed cases. 30 deaths: Bauchi (11); Katsina (10); Niger (two), FCT (two) and Jigawa (one) states with CFR of 2.6 per cent,” it stated.

The Centre said no new state reported cases in Epi Week 30, adding that the 1, 162 reported during Epi Week 30 represented a 44 per cent decrease, when compared to the 2, 082 suspected cases reported in Week 29.

The NCDC further stated that “the national mukti-sectoral EOC activated at Level 02 continues to coordinate the national response” to the cholera disease epidemic.
