The Oyo State Government has allayed the fears of the people of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area on the Iyamopo Hill disruption that occured over the weekend.
This was as it declared that no loss of life was recorded during the incident, and therefore called on the residents of the area to remain calm.
The state government stated in a statement by the state Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Tuesday, that it has started immediate evaluation of the situation.
According to the commissioner, experts from the Oyo State Solid Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), under its Director General Mr. Biodun Oni, have been dispatched to the Iyamopo Hill.
He added: “The disruption at the Iyamopo Hill is a result of physical weathering on the rock caused by intense heat from February to May early this year, followed by sudden cooling.
“This expansion and contraction leads to cracking, peeling, and sheeting, resulting in minor tremors and rock movements as witnessed over the weekend.”
He further stated that the government was also working with experts from the University of Ibadan to analyse the geological activity and provide solutions to mitigate future occurrences and also develop strategies to safeguarding lives and property in the affected area
Oyelade stated that residents can be assured that there is no cause for alarm, emphasising that no casualties have been recorded in the incident.
However, as a precautionary measure, the commissioner urged individuals residing near the Iyamopo Hill to evacuate temporarily until a permanent solution was found.
He said government remained committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens “We will continue to prioritise public safety and give updates as investigations progress,” he added.
