Chief Benson Enikuomehin, a Lagos-based lawyer, has accused the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Alagbon, Lagos of demanding for the sum of ₦50,000 before accepting any form of petition.
He leveled the accusation in a release dated 4 May, 2025 and addressed to the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The statement was titled “Attention: ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, PFPRO- Payment Of ₦50,000.00 To Submit Petition.”
Enikuomehin further stated in the release that the amount is non-receipted, adding that the Force Headquarters, Alagbon will not attend to any petition if the ₦50,000 is not attached to it.
“It is important to bring to your attention Sir, that the Police now collect ₦50,000.00 non-receipted for any petition submitted at the Force Headquarters, Alagbon, Lagos.
“No petition submitted to this office will be attended to until the ₦50,000.00 is attached,” he stated in the release.
The Lagos-based lawyer tasked ACP Adejobi to confirm of the ₦50,000 extortion was the standard practice in the police and asked why receipts of payment are not given.
“Official payments made at our courts are receipted for. If this is the standard practice under the watch of Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, IGP, the general public should know and receipts should be given for such payments.
“Kindly state the official position of the Nigeria Police Force on this matter,” Chief Enikuomehin added in the release.
Efforts to get police reaction to the accusation were futile as at press time as calls, text message and WhatsApp message to mobile phone of the FPRO, Adejobi, on Sunday were neither picked, returned nor responded to.
