K1 @ 64: Lagos Wasn’t Ready For Him But…
Lagos was not ready for him. But he seemed ready for the metropolis. He was young, suave, skinny and sexy. He was a charming free spirit that rocked the microphone when he bursted onto Nigeria’s traditional Fuji music scene.
Wasiu Ayinde’s fans were waiting to discover him. Those days, he travelled to his engagements like a rock star with amazing sex appeal, escorted by legions of female fans. His crowd was inclusive, from royalties to everyday city dwellers.
Wasiu was everywhere, loved by peasants and jealoused by colleagues, he didnt care. His voice was sassy, rugged but rhythmic. His fan base adored him, through the years. He didnt leave them behind, from his modest Isale Eko office to the earth, Kwam 1, before he became an enchanting ULTIMATE that rocked the mic, cultivated every person and genre of music.
He challenged orthodox Fuji music instruments primitivity, experimented with the music tempo by infusing and enhancing rhythms and vocals. And the people gyrated because its only Kwam 1 that could pull such musical non-comformity with the beats.
These times, a dear friend that I was privileged to cover his early rise in showbiz, turns 64. I remember those moments, younger years with this free spirit super star. Lets toast him today and perhaps, roast, another day. Mega earthday, my brother. Stay with me.
