2 Bandits, 1 Police Officer Killed In Gun Duel
Two men, suspected to be bandits and one police officer with the Ogun State Police Command were killed in a gun duel, on Tuesday.
The three persons, according to a release by the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, were killed during a gun exchange with the police at the Isaala Orile Forest, where the bandits were attacking some Fulani herders.
The Ogun PPRO, in the release, AZ:5310/OGS/PRO/VOL.7/71/26/01/2022, said the suspected bandits were killed following a distress call received by policemen attached to Ayetoro Division.
He gave the name of the police operative who lost his life in the course of the gun exchange with the suspected bandits as Omolayo Olajide, an Inspector of Police.
Oyeyemi stated that the police operatives were informed that a group of bandits were attacking some Fulani herdsmen at the Isaala Orile Forest.
“Upon the distress call, the DPO Ayetoro, CSP Bernard Ediogboyan, quickly led his men and operatives of Joint security Intervention Squad (JSIS) to the scene.
“On sighting the policemen, the bandits opened fire on them and the policemen replied fire for fire.
“At the end of the encounter, which lasted for about 20 minutes, two amongst the bandits were shot dead, while others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.
“Regrettably, an Inspector of Police, by name Omolayo Olajide, lost his life during the gun duel,” he stated in the release.
DSP Oyeyemi further said three-locally made guns, 16 live cartridges, assorted criminal charms, one cutlass, one small phone and one unregistered Bajaj motorcycle were recovered from the bandits.
He said the state Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, expressed sadness over the death of the police officer, assuring his family that his death will not be in vain.
Oyeyemi added that CP Bankole has directed that the escaped members of the gang must be hunted for and brought to justice.
